The Neuroscience of Learning and Leading

Linda Ray
Neuresource Group

As educators and leaders, we should be concerned about the following trends:

  • A 40 percent drop in empathy in college students measured by standard tests of personality trait
  • A skills deficit in the empathetic arts – eye contact, listening and attending to others
  • A drop-in attention spans down from 12 seconds to 8 seconds (less than a goldfish)
  • Rising rates of digital dementia linked to heavy digital use and its impact on attention and cognitive abilities
  • Our obsession with multi-tasking and its impacts on productivity
  • Increasing rates of stress and psychological distress in students, higher in girls
  • The rising levels of poor sleep hygiene
  • A crisis of solitude – people are uncomfortable left alone with their thoughts for as little as six minutes and yet we know a quiet brain is necessary for insight and creativity
  • Prevalence of fixed mindsets and its relationship with school dropout and underperformance

Why do the best leaders and educators lead and educate with the brain in mind? Because they know when it comes to influencing, educating, engaging and motivating others, what’s happening in the brain makes all the difference. Neuroscience is unlocking secrets to what really matters when leading and educating others, but more importantly WHY it matters. The knowledge in this Masterclass will help you to understand the devastating consequences to the above trends and what you can do to change this.

Who Should Attend?

Anyone with a brain!

It’s for innovators and creators who need to find new ways of finding solutions and understanding human experience in this inter-connected world.

If your workday involves leading anyone with a brain.... then this Masterclass is for you.

Why Attend?

  • Learn why the digital era is a bit like climate change
  • To date models of leadership have focussed on two intelligences – emotional and social intelligence. However, there is a third and it turns leadership on its head! Find out what it is and why it is so important for current and future leaders.
  • Learn why psychological safety matters in any environment and how to create the right environments to facilitate psychological safety
  • Because mindset matters! Learn how to change it in yourself, your people and your students to master stress and improve performance
  • Learn why attention is a valuable resource, how to protect it and improve productivity by at least 20%.
  • Benefit by taking away practical tools and strategies that will support you to build ‘brain-friendly’ learning and leading environments.

8:30 | Arrival

9:00 | Commencement

9:00 - 10:30 | Session 1:

This session will explore why the brain matters in leading and learning. You will explore the key organising principle of the brain and the drivers of behaviour in the social world that impact on each of us every day. In this session you will learn 3 models (Integrate, SCARE and AGES) and how to apply these to create better work and learning environments.

Learning outcomes: Participants will learn why and how the brain drives behaviour and how to create environments that enhance psychological safety.

10:30 - 10:50 | Tea & Coffee Break

11:00 - 12:45 | Session 2:

We can’t escape the digital revolution but we can find ways to mitigate the impact on our empathy and our attention. This session will focus on how we can take action to avert the looming crisis of empathy and develop a thoughtful and intentional relationship with digital technology. We will explore how our attention span has diminished and the significant consequences of splitting attention and distraction on learning and productivity.

Learning outcomes: Participants will learn about the impact of digital technology on capacity for empathy, cognition and attention and develop intention plans to take back to the work environment to mitigate the impact of the digital revolution.

12:30 - 1:20 | Lunch Break

1:20 - 2:40 | Session 3:

Mindset matters – The most recent research around mindset shows it can be changed. This session will explore mindset in the context of stress and learning. The way we deal with stress is significantly influenced by our mindset. Our performance is also significantly influenced by our learning mindset.

Learning outcomes:

Understand the difference between stress mindset (debilitating or enhancing) and growth and fixed mindset and their impacts. Attendees will explore their own mindset and practical actions that can be taken to change mindset for self and for others.

2:45 - 3:00 | Brain Break

3:00 - 4:00 | Session 4:

To be successful in life we need to demonstrate social and emotional intelligence. Emotional intelligence has been identified as one of the top 10 future of work skills by the World Economic forum. There is a third intelligence which hasn’t yet found its way onto the top 10 list yet - but it will. In this session, we explore the third intelligence which is key to being a great leader and becoming the boss of our attention.

Learning outcomes: Attendees will learn how these three intelligences are interdependent and how to find balance and align them to support optimal performance, to manage self and to engage well with others.
